Volkswagen Eurovan Sales Figures

Volkswagen Eurovan

The Volkswagen Transporter T4 was imported to the United States as the Eurovan to replace the Volkswagen Vanagon. It no longer had an air-cooled engine in the rear, nor rear-wheel drive. It was introduced with a 5-cylinder engine, but was more popular with the later VR6 engine. The Eurovan was discontinued in 2003 when the T4 was replaced by the T5, which hasn’t been sold in the US. Volkswagen did introduce a rebadged Chrysler Town & Country in 2008 as the very unsuccessful Routan.

Volkswagen Eurovan Overview

The Volkswagen Eurovan, known in other parts of the world as the VW Transporter T4 or simply the VW T4, marked a significant departure from Volkswagen’s previous line of vans. Introduced in 1990, the Eurovan was the fourth generation of Volkswagen’s long-running Transporter series, and it brought a host of updates and changes that set it apart from its predecessors.

The most significant departure of the Eurovan/T4 from the earlier VW vans was its front-mounted, water-cooled engine, as opposed to the rear-mounted, air-cooled or water-cooled engines of previous generations. This shift allowed for a more spacious interior and improved driving dynamics.

The Eurovan was available in various configurations including panel vans, minivans, campers, and even a pickup in some markets. Over its production run, the Eurovan was available with a range of gasoline and diesel engines. Notably, in North America, a VR6 gasoline engine was introduced in the mid-’90s, providing improved power and performance. One of the most beloved versions of the Eurovan in North America was the Camper variant, outfitted by Winnebago. It included a pop-up roof, sleeping quarters, and a small kitchenette, making it a favorite among travel enthusiasts.
