The Best-Selling Cars, SUVs, Minivans and Trucks

The Top-Selling Vehicles in the U.S Automotive Market for 2009

2009 was an unprecedented year for the U.S. auto industry. The economic downturn from the previous year’s financial crisis severely impacted vehicle sales, and two of the Big Three automakers, General Motors and Chrysler, went through bankruptcy restructurings. Additionally, the U.S. government introduced the Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS), also known as “Cash for Clunkers,” in an effort to stimulate new car sales and get older, less fuel-efficient vehicles off the road.

Despite the overall downturn in the auto market, the F-Series retained its spot as the top-selling vehicle in the U.S. The Chevrolet Silverado remained in the second spot, even though sales were down from previous years. The Toyota Camry’s reputation for reliability and fuel efficiency helped it maintain its position among the top sellers and it was once again the top-selling passenger car for the year. Up there in passenger cars sales was also the Honda Accord, which similar to the Camry has a strong reputation that kept it in the top ranks of best-selling vehicles.
