Renault Sales Data, Trends & Analysis for the Chinese Automotive Market
China auto sales statistics for Renault only include the models that are locally produced in China through the Dongfeng-Renault Joint Venture with local manufacturing partner Dongfeng Motor, and excludes import models.
After importing low volumes of the first generation Renault Koleos crossover and Fluence and Latitude sedans from South-Korea and the first generation Renault Captur from France, Renault got serious about the Chinese car market when it opened a new factory with its partner Dongfeng (which also has JVs with Renault’s alliance partner Nissan, but also with its rival PSA Peugeot-Citroën) in 2016 with an annual capacity of 300,000 units.
The first model produced in this factory was the Kadjar, and the second was the second generation Koleos, a larger crossover, followed by the second generation Captur compact crossover and the City KZ-E small crossover EV. Renault China Sales Figures & Recent Highlights
Renault is a French automobile manufacturer headquartered in Boulogne-Billancourt, France. The company was founded in 1899, and it is one of the largest automakers in the world. Renault is known for its affordable and stylish cars. Renault entered the Chinese market in 1993 through a joint venture with Dongfeng Motor Corporation. The joint venture was called Dongfeng Renault Automobile Company (DRAC), and it produced a range of Renault vehicles for the Chinese market, including sedans, SUVs, and MPVs.
However, DRAC sales have been declining in recent years, and the joint venture was dissolved in 2020. Renault has since announced that it will focus on selling electric vehicles in the Chinese market. In 2022, Renault announced a new joint venture with Geely Automobile to develop and produce electric vehicles for the Chinese market. The new joint venture is called Renault Geely Automotive Company (RGAC), and it is headquartered in Shanghai. RGAC plans to launch its first electric vehicle in China in 2024. The company is targeting the budget-friendly segment of the electric vehicle market.
