Nissan Primastar
The Nissan Primastar is a light commercial vehicle (LCV) produced by the Japanese automaker Nissan. The Primastar was essentially part of a joint venture between Nissan, Renault, and Opel/Vauxhall, resulting in vehicles that are nearly identical except for their badges and minor styling cues. The Primastar was replaced in 2016 by the Nissan NV300.
Nissan Primastar Overview
The Primastar is a result of collaboration between three automakers: Nissan, Renault, and Opel/Vauxhall. The same vehicle was also marketed as the Renault Trafic and the Opel/Vauxhall Vivaro. While there were minor differences in terms of branding and specific features, the core design and engineering were largely shared between these versions.
Introduced in 2001, the Nissan Primastar was produced until 2014, after which Nissan decided not to continue with this badge, and the next generation of this van under the Renault-Nissan alliance was badged as the Renault Trafic and Nissan NV300. The Primastar was available in a variety of body styles to cater to different commercial needs, including panel vans, crew vans, and minibuses.
Given its commercial orientation, the Primastar was designed with functionality in mind. However, over its production life, it did see upgrades in terms of safety, comfort, and in-cabin technology to keep it competitive in its segment. The Primastar, along with its Renault and Opel/Vauxhall counterparts, competed in the European market against other mid-sized vans like the Ford Transit Custom and Volkswagen Transporter. It was well-regarded for its versatility and the variety of configurations available, catering to a wide range of commercial needs.
