Lincoln Sales Data, Trends & Analysis for the Chinese Automotive Market
China auto sales statistics for Lincoln are for imported models (until 2019), as opposed to most other Chinese car sales data on this site, which include models that are locally produced in China. Lincoln started production in China in 2020 with its partner Changan Auto. The Corsair and Aviator crossovers were its first two locally produced models and more will be added while also continuing to import certain models from the US. Since the last quarter of 2015, Lincoln imports the MKZ sedan, MKC (now replaced by the locally made Corsair) and MKX crossovers as well as the Navigator SUV into China, adding the all-new Continental sedan to its line-up in the second half of 2016. Outside of its home market he brand is not sold in large volumes except for China, where it has started local production in 2020.
Lincoln China Sales Figures & Recent Highlights
Lincoln, the luxury vehicle division of the American automotive company Ford Motor Company, has recognized the importance of the Chinese market and made significant strides in establishing its presence there. China, being the largest automotive market in the world, holds immense potential for luxury automakers, and Lincoln’s strategies in the country reflect this potential.
Lincoln officially entered the Chinese market in 2014, significantly later than some of its luxury competitors. However, since its entry, the brand has been aggressively expanding its dealer network and tailoring its offerings to suit the tastes and preferences of Chinese consumers. Recognizing the distinct preferences of Chinese consumers, Lincoln emphasized the importance of localization. This strategy involved adjusting vehicle designs, introducing unique trims, and even developing models specifically tailored for the Chinese market. The brand also localized its customer service experiences, focusing on high-end, personalized services which are highly valued in the Chinese luxury market.
Initially, Lincoln imported its vehicles to China, but recognizing the benefits of local production – from cost savings to avoiding import tariffs – Lincoln, under Ford’s guidance, began manufacturing some models locally. By doing so, the brand could price its vehicles more competitively. In collaboration with its joint venture partner in China, Changan Ford, Lincoln began the production of vehicles domestically, which is a significant step to deepen its roots in the Chinese market.
Since its entry, Lincoln witnessed steady growth in its sales figures in China. The brand’s focus on SUVs and crossovers, which are especially popular in the Chinese market, contributed to this growth. Lincoln faces stiff competition in China, not only from established luxury brands like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi but also from newer entrants and domestic luxury brands.
