Land Rover China Sales Figures & Recent Highlights
Land Rover, the iconic British luxury SUV manufacturer, has made significant strides in the Chinese market, especially over the past couple of decades. The brand’s blend of luxury, off-road capability, and design appeal has made it popular among Chinese consumers. To strengthen its position in the Chinese market and adhere to the country’s regulations for foreign automakers, Land Rover, in collaboration with its parent company Jaguar (collectively known as Jaguar Land Rover or JLR), entered into a joint venture with Chery Automobile Co. in 2012. This JV, known as Chery Jaguar Land Rover (CJLR), enabled localized production of select JLR models. The JV set up a manufacturing plant in Changshu, Jiangsu Province, which began operations in 2014. This plant produces models tailored to the preferences and needs of Chinese consumers.
Land Rover offers a wide range of its global lineup in China, including the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Velar, Range Rover Evoque, Discovery, and Discovery Sport, among others. The brand has also introduced models and variants specifically designed for the Chinese market, often with longer wheelbases to cater to local preferences for increased rear-seat legroom.
Land Rover’s models have gained significant traction among affluent Chinese consumers who value the brand’s combination of luxury, performance, and ruggedness. The brand’s SUVs, particularly the Range Rover Evoque, have been especially popular in urban areas of China. As with many luxury brands, Land Rover has had to deal with issues related to counterfeit models and intellectual property violations in China. The most notable case was a dispute over a Chinese vehicle that bore a striking resemblance to the Range Rover Evoque. The competitive landscape in China is fierce, with numerous domestic and international luxury brands vying for market share.
Land Rover, in alignment with global automotive trends and Chinese government initiatives, is focusing on electrification. The brand aims to introduce more electric and hybrid models in China. The company is also investing in enhancing its brand image, expanding its dealership network, and improving after-sales services to further entrench its position in the market.
Land Rover has made efforts to integrate its brand more deeply into Chinese culture. This includes special editions for local festivals, participation in local events, and marketing campaigns tailored to resonate with Chinese values and aspirations.
