Hyundai Kia Auto Group China Sales Figures & Recent Highlights
Hyundai entered the Chinese market in the early 2000s, initially through joint ventures with local partners such as Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co. (BAIC). It quickly gained a strong foothold with models well-suited to the local market, like the Elantra and Tucson. Kia entered China around the same time as Hyundai and formed joint ventures with Dongfeng Yueda Kia and others. Kia, too, saw rapid growth in the early years with popular models like the Sportage and the K3 (Forte).
The group’s sales in China peaked in 2016, when it sold over 1.8 million vehicles. However, sales have declined since then, and in 2022, the group sold just over 477,000 vehicles in China. After enjoying initial success, Hyundai faced challenges due to a combination of factors, including political tensions between China and South Korea and intense competition from both domestic and foreign brands. Sales took a significant hit around 2017 but have shown some recovery. Hyundai has been working to reinvigorate its product lineup in China to meet local consumer preferences, including introducing more SUVs and electric models. With China’s push towards electric mobility, Hyundai has been introducing electric and hybrid models, including localized versions tailored for the Chinese market.
Like Hyundai, Kia has also faced challenges in maintaining its market share in China due to geopolitical issues and intense competition. Kia has also been focusing on offering more SUVs and electric vehicles to cater to Chinese consumers’ shifting preferences. Kia has been adapting its models to better suit local tastes, including features and design elements catering to the Chinese market.
