Gonow Auto started making automobiles in 2003 and is a subsidiary of Guangzhou Automobile Group Co.(GAC), which also produces and markets the Changfeng and GAC-Trumpchi (sub-)brands in China and has manufacturing Joint Ventures with Fiat, Honda, Mitsubishi and Toyota. Gonow China Sales Figures & Recent Highlights
Gonow initially focused on producing small trucks, vans, and mini vehicles. Over time, the company ventured into SUVs and pickup trucks. Some of its known products include the Gonow Aoosed GX5 and the Gonow Xingwang, a light pickup truck. In the mid-2010s, Gonow entered into a joint venture with GAC Group (Guangzhou Automobile Group Co., Ltd.), one of China’s major automotive conglomerates. However, the collaboration faced challenges and did not result in significant successes for either party.
Gonow vehicles were typically positioned as affordable alternatives within their respective segments. The company aimed to capture a share of the budget-conscious segment of the market, both in China and in export markets. Gonow pursued export opportunities and was able to make inroads in various countries, especially in developing markets in Africa, South America, and other regions. The affordability of Gonow vehicles made them somewhat popular in countries looking for budget-friendly transportation options.
Despite its early ambitions, Gonow faced various challenges. By the mid-2010s, the brand encountered financial difficulties. In 2016, facing mounting debts and operational challenges, Gonow officially filed for bankruptcy. Gonow ceased its primary operations, and its future in the automotive industry is dead in the water.
