The Jimmy was replaced by the GMC Envoy in 2004.
GMC Jimmy Overview
The GMC Jimmy is a line of SUVs produced by the GMC division of General Motors. Over the years, the name “Jimmy” has been applied to a few different vehicles, but it’s most commonly associated with GMC’s mid-size SUV, which was essentially the counterpart to the Chevrolet Blazer. The name “Jimmy” was used for GMC’s version of the vehicle, while Chevrolet named its version the “Blazer.”
The Jimmy name was first applied to a two-door version of GMC’s full-size truck in 1970. This was a short-lived generation. This generation was based on the same platform as the Chevrolet K5 Blazer. The Jimmy underwent a redesign in 1973, with the introduction of both two-door and four-door models later in the generation. The K5 Jimmy, as it was known, became a favorite among off-road enthusiasts due to its solid axles, durability, and larger size. This generation’s long production run testifies to its success and popularity. The removable hardtop on the two-door models made them particularly popular.
In 1982, in addition to the full-sized Jimmy, GMC introduced a compact SUV named the S-15 Jimmy, based on the GMC S-15 pickup truck (counterpart to Chevrolet’s S-10 pickup). This was a smaller vehicle than the full-size Jimmy and catered to the emerging compact SUV market. This compact Jimmy shared a platform with the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer.
The Jimmy saw another redesign in 1995, dropping the “S-15” nomenclature and simply being called “Jimmy.” This generation marked the end of the full-size Jimmy, leaving only the mid-size SUV in production. It continued to share a platform with the Chevrolet Blazer. Over the years, the Jimmy received various updates in terms of comfort, safety, and technology features to remain competitive.
