2021 Best Selling SUV Cars In China (All Models Ranked)

In 2021, the SUV segment in China maintained its momentum and was among the most active and competitive segments in the automotive market. SUVs remained a favored vehicle type for Chinese consumers, offering a blend of style, practicality, and perceived safety. The New Energy Vehicle (NEV) trend was especially pronounced in the SUV sector. Several electric SUVs were launched, catering to different market segments from luxury to mass-market.

Smaller, more urban-friendly SUVs became even more popular, striking a balance between the appeal of an SUV and the practicality needed for city driving. Like the broader auto industry, the SUV segment was impacted by the global semiconductor chip shortage, leading to production constraints and longer delivery times for some models.

As one of China’s leading automakers, Geely’s Boyue and Xingyue models were particularly popular in the SUV segment. The Haval sub-brand, especially models like the Haval H6, maintained strong sales and was a common sight on Chinese roads. The Tang and Yuan models, especially in their electric and hybrid versions, were noteworthy contributors to BYD’s SUV sales. The Roewe RX5 and MG ZS (also available in an electric version) continued to attract attention. The Changan CS75 Plus and CS35 Plus were significant players in the medium and compact SUV segments, respectively. The Nio ES6 and EC6 electric SUVs, known for their performance and range, garnered attention in the premium segment.

Once again, the Volkswagen Tiguan and Tharu were among the top-selling SUVs, solidifying Volkswagen’s presence in the segment. The Toyota RAV4, bolstered by its hybrid variant, was among the foreign brands’ top contenders in the SUV market. The Honda CR-V and Vezel (known as HR-V in some markets) maintained their popularity in China.
