China's automotive market has witnessed significant changes in segment mix over the past decade, reflecting evolving consumer preferences, regulatory shifts, and broader economic trends. At the beginning of the decade, sedans were the dominant segment in China, much like in many other parts of the world. Brands like Volkswagen, with models like the Passat and the Jetta, and Toyota, with the Corolla and Camry, enjoyed substantial sales. Over the decade, the demand for sedans began to decrease, particularly in the face of rising interest in SUVs. However, sedans still remained popular in urban areas and among certain consumer demographics. The SUV segment saw explosive growth during the decade. Many Chinese consumers preferred SUVs due to their larger size, perceived safety, and status symbol. This was also in line with global trends where SUVs gained significant traction. The segment diversified, with offerings ranging from compact SUVs suitable for city driving to larger, more rugged models. Multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) or minivans have had a stable demand, especially among families and businesses. While they didn't witness the explosive growth of SUVs, models like the Wuling Hongguang (a joint venture product of SAIC-GM) remained best-sellers. The latter half of the decade saw a pronounced growth in NEVs, encompassing electric vehicles (EVs), plug-in hybrids, and fuel-cell vehicles. The Chinese government's push for cleaner transportation through subsidies and incentives, coupled with advancements in battery technology, fueled this growth. Within the NEV category, there was a diverse range of offerings, from compact EVs to luxury electric SUVs. Brands like Tesla dominated the premium segment, while local brands like BYD and NIO covered various market segments. The luxury car segment has seen consistent growth in China over the decade. As the middle class expanded and disposable incomes rose, brands like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi enjoyed robust sales. The trend was noticeable across different vehicle types, from luxury sedans to premium SUVs.
