Chery Sales Data, Trends & Analysis for the Chinese Automotive Market

Chery auto, established in the 1960s, produces and markets cars under the Chery, Cowin, Karry and Exeed (sub-)brands in China (and in the past also Rely and Riich) and has manufacturing Joint Ventures with Jaguar and Land Rover. Chery was also a 50% shareholder in Qoros auto. Some of its models are also assembled in Italy under the DR-motor brand. In China, Buick is perceived as a premium, aspirational brand. This perception contrasts with the brand’s image in some other markets, where it might be seen as catering more to an older demographic.

Chery China Sales Figures & Recent Highlights

Buick’s association with China dates back to the early 20th century. Notably, the last emperor of China, Puyi, and the country’s first provisional president, Sun Yat-sen, both owned Buick cars. This historical connection helped cement Buick’s reputation as a premium, reputable brand in China.

In the late 1990s, when GM was deciding which brand to introduce to the Chinese market, Buick was chosen due to its historical prestige and potential appeal to Chinese consumers. Buick was reintroduced in China in 1998 as a joint venture between General Motors and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) called Shanghai GM (now SAIC-GM). Buick’s decision to enter the Chinese market proved to be highly beneficial. By the 2010s, Buick’s sales in China surpassed its sales in the United States.

China quickly became Buick’s largest market globally, with models like the Excelle and the GL8 minivan being particularly popular. Recognizing the unique tastes and preferences of Chinese consumers, Buick has developed models specifically for the Chinese market. The brand has emphasized luxury, spacious interiors, and features tailored to local preferences. For instance, the Buick GL8, a luxury MPV, has been a hit in China, where there’s substantial demand for premium multi-passenger vehicles.

Keeping in line with China’s aggressive push toward electric vehicles (EVs) and stricter emission norms, Buick has invested in introducing electrified models in the country. The brand has showcased concept EVs and announced plans for a range of electric and hybrid vehicles tailored to the Chinese market.
