Honda’s Luxury Sibling is All Grown Up

Quick Nav

Honda is the parent company of Acura. However, far from being in the Japanese carmaker’s shadow, Acura has carved its own niche as a brand synonymous with luxury, quality and reliability.

In the North American market, Acura posted a strong result for 2023, recording its best passenger sales since 2016. Its RDX and MDX models also sold almost 100,000 units for the year, an impressive performance given the nature of the competition.

The ZDX, an all-electric SUV all-new for the 2024 MY, will spearhead Acura’s thrust into the EV segment as the brand seeks to establish a foothold in that market.

Specifications

  • MSRP: starts at $73,500 USD /  $99,125 CAD
  • Engine: Dual electric motor (front & rear)
  • Power / Torque: 500 hp /  NA (Combined)
  • Drivetrain: AWD

  • Fuel Economy: NA
  • Range: 288 miles (463 km)
  • Basic Warranty: 4 years /  50,000 miles (80,000 km)

Our Take

Acura pulled no punches with its first all-electric offering in a rapidly expanding segment. The top-end Type S trim is billed as the most powerful and quickest accelerating SUV in the carmaker’s inventory. The ZDX Type S sacrifices range for performance, and it’s hard to ignore its 500 hp output and dual-motor setup. Toss in the other fancy technology bits from Acura, and the ZDX, fresh for the 2024 MY, is coming to the market well-equipped to handle the competition.

  • Engine: 2.0L turbocharged inline-4
  • Power / Torque: 272 hp /  280 lb-ft

  • Basic Warranty: 4 years /  50,000 miles (80,000 km)

Our Take

The RDX SUV is a top-selling Acura model, beaten only by the MDX for the year 2023. The compact luxury SUV is available in four different trims with a common theme of premium finishings and standard all-wheel-drive. The Technology trim offers great value with niceties like leather-trimmed seats, a top-notch sound system and an attractive price point.

Specifications

  • MSRP: starts at $51,800 USD /  $69,860 CAD
  • Engine: 2.0L turbocharged inline-4
  • Power / Torque: 320 hp /  310 lb-ft
  • Transmission: AWD
  • 0-60 mph: 5.1 seconds
  • Fuel Economy: 24 MPG (city) | 9.8 L/100 km /  28 MPG | 8.4 L/100 km (highway)
  • Basic Warranty: 4 years /  50,000 miles (80,000 km)

Our Take

The Integra was designed as a sports sedan and the Type S trim dials up that persona by several notches. It excels with a punch turbocharged engine, athletic handling and aggressive styling. The fact that the sporty Integra Type S snagged the Road & Track Performance Car of the Year award is a sterling addition to an already impressive resume. There’s a manual option too, a big miss for most of its rivals.

2024 Acura TLX Type S

Specifications

  • MSRP: starts at $57,000 USD /  $76,873 CAD
  • Engine: 3.0L turbocharged V6
  • Power / Torque: 355 hp  /  354 lb-ft
  • Transmission: AWD
  • 0-60 mph: 5.0 seconds
  • Fuel Economy: 19 MPG (city) | 12.4 L/100 km /  25 MPG | 9.4 L/100 km (highway)
  • Basic Warranty: 4 years /  50,000 miles (80,000 km)

Our Take

As with the Integra, the Type S package adds a healthy dose of performance improvements to the TLX. It lags behind some of its main rivals like the Mercedes Benz C-Class and the BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe. However, it costs far less, and there’s still plenty on offer to make for an engaging driving experience.

2024 Acura MDX Technology

Specifications

  • MSRP: starts at $54,850 USD /  $73,973 CAD
  • Engine: 3.5L V6
  • Power / Torque: 290 hp /  267 lb-ft
  • Transmission: AWD
  • 0-60 mph: 6.4 seconds
  • Fuel Economy: 19 MPG (city) | 12.4 L/100 km /  25 MPG | 9.4 L/100 km (highway)
  • Basic Warranty: 4 years /  50,000 miles (80,000 km)

Our Take

Acura’s biggest vehicle is also its best-seller, and there’s good reason for that. The three-row luxury SUV boasts a sporty, attractive styling and thanks to its capable powertrain, actually handles lighter than a vehicle of that size should. The Technology trim lacks the gustiness of the 355-hp Type S, but there are a lot of driver assists and other tech wizardry to impress – it’s way cheaper too.
