Best of the 2023 Ford Lineup

Showcasing the Blue Oval’s Finest

Ford might have trimmed down its lineup over the past few years, choosing to focus on SUVs and trucks. The Mustang is currently its only car offering, but there’s still plenty in the lineup to keep the Blue Oval at the top of America’s automobile dynasty.

Examples include the recently introduced second-gen Ford Bronco, Mustang Mach-E and the all-electric pickup, the F-150 Lightning.

These models help position Ford as it competes for market share in the highly competitive automobile sector.

Our Take

The F-150 Lightning was introduced in May 2021 as part of the fourteenth-generation Ford F-Series. The carmaker cleverly wrapped the EV platform in an already familiar body style, and it’s a move that’s helped the F-150 Lightning gain some traction in the pickup segment. There are several trims available, but the Flash Extended Range is a desirable sweet spot with many desirable features like the 15.5-inch entertainment screen and extended battery pack.

Specifications

  • MSRP: starts at $39,720 USD /  $53,612 CAD
  • Engine: 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8
  • Power / Torque: 450 hp /  410 lb-ft
  • Drivetrain: RWD
  • 0-60 mph: 4.4 seconds
  • Fuel Economy: 15 MPG (City) /  24 MPG (Highway)
  • Basic Warranty: 3 years /  36,000 miles (60,000 km)

Our Take

The pony car is arguably Ford’s most iconic car, one that’s been the face of the brand for over six decades. Now in its seventh generation, the Mustang continues to impress as America’s leading muscle car. The entry models have a decent EcoBoost turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, but we’d opt for the GT trim with its 450-hp V8 setup, preferably with the six-speed manual transmission.

Specifications

  • MSRP: starts at $36,785 USD /  $49,650 CAD
  • Engine: 2.3-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder
  • Power / Torque: 300 hp /  325 lb-ft

  • Fuel Economy: 20 MPG (City) /  21 MPG (Highway)
  • Basic Warranty: 3 years /  36,000 miles (60,000 km)

Our Take

The Bronco nameplate was revived by Ford in 2021. The sturdy vehicle projects the vibe and off-road pedigree of its mid-1960s predecessors. The second-gen Bronco is a blend of retro-themed styling and modern innovative features that make it a serious threat to heavyweights in the segment like the Jeep Wrangler. There are nine trims available for the 2023 model year, in addition to an endless array of customization options.

2023 Ford Maverick

Specifications

  • MSRP: starts at $24,170 USD /  $32,623 CAD
  • Engine: 2.5-litre 4-cylinder + 2 AC motors
  • Power / Torque: 191 hp /  267 lb-ft (combined)
  • Drivetrain: FWD (optional AWD)

  • Fuel Economy: 23 MPG (City) /  30 MPG (Highway)
  • Basic Warranty: 3 years /  36,000 miles (60,000 km)

Our Take

Ford’s Maverick pickup boasts a compact body style that’s an appealing proposition for pickup shoppers who require a small work truck for light tasks. The truck also comes in at a very affordable price point, though moving up the trim adds ‘nice-to-haves’ like cruise control and a power lock for the tailgate. There’s also an optional Tow Package that unlocks the maximum 4,000-lb towing capacity.

2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R

Specifications

  • MSRP: $109,145 USD /  $147,319 CAD
  • Engine: 5.2-litre supercharged V8
  • Power / Torque: 700 hp /  640 lb-ft
  • Drivetrain: AWD
  • 0-60 mph: 3.6 seconds
  • Fuel Economy: 10 MPG (City) /  15 MPG (Highway)
  • Basic Warranty: 3 years /  36,000 miles (60,000 km)

Our Take

For years, the F-150 Raptor has been Ford’s pickup formula that successfully mixes top-notch performance with off-roading capabilities. The 2023 model year is no different. The performance truck packs a host of features that make it even more capable than ever. Now, there’s an even more formidable Raptor R with a supercharged V8 under the hood. It’s more expensive, but if you are going for the Raptor, you might as well settle for the ‘King of the Hill.’

2023 Ford Explorer ST

Specifications

  • MSRP: starts at $51,600 USD /  $69,647 CAD
  • Engine: 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6
  • Power / Torque: 400 hp /  415 lb-ft
  • Drivetrain: AWD

  • Fuel Economy: 17 MPG (City) /  24 MPG (Highway)
  • Basic Warranty: 3 years /  36,000 miles (60,000 km)

Our Take

For the most part, the Explorer is like most full-size SUVs – roomy and practical. The ST trim level adds some excitement to the mix, thanks to its fiery 400-hp V6 engine. It’s the only way to really enjoy the driving experience of what is otherwise just a regular SUV.

2023 Ford Expedition

Specifications

  • MSRP: starts at $57,620 USD /  $77,773 CAD
  • Engine: 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6
  • Power / Torque: 380 hp /  470 lb-ft
  • Drivetrain: AWD (RWD also available)
  • 0-60 mph: 6.2 seconds
  • Fuel Economy: 16 MPG (City) /  22 MPG (Highway)
  • Basic Warranty: 3 years /  36,000 miles (60,000 km)

Our Take

Ford’s biggest SUV is also one of the largest in the market, competing favourably in size with other behemoths like the Chevrolet Suburban and Cadillac Escalade. It handles well for its bulk, thanks to a punch twin-turbo V6. There are also plenty of available features spread across the different trim levels. They include a premium sound system, leather trimmings and power-operated running boards.
