Land Rover LR3
The Land Rover LR3, known as the Discovery 3 outside of North America, is a mid-size luxury SUV produced by the British automaker Land Rover. It was introduced in 2004 and ran until 2009, when it was succeeded by the LR4 (or Discovery 4 in other markets).

The LR3 marked a significant departure from the design and engineering of the earlier Discovery models. It introduced the Integrated Body Frame design, which combined the monocoque and ladder-frame chassis for a balance between off-road robustness and on-road comfort. Its exterior design was modernized, moving away from the curves of the Discovery 2 to a more angular and contemporary appearance.
The LR3 was renowned for its off-road prowess, even by Land Rover standards. It was one of the first vehicles to incorporate Land Rover’s Terrain Response system, which allows drivers to select the type of ground they’re driving on (rock crawl, mud and ruts, sand, etc.), and the vehicle would automatically adjust various settings to best handle that terrain. Other features that bolstered its off-road capability included the adjustable air suspension and the hill descent control system.
The LR3 featured a spacious and versatile interior. It offered optional third-row seating, accommodating up to seven passengers. The cabin was designed with premium materials, a high driving position, and a command driving view. The central console featured a straightforward design with easy-to-use controls.
In the North American market, the LR3 was often equipped with a 4.4-liter V8 petrol engine, though a 2.7-liter V6 turbo diesel was also available in other markets. The vehicle came with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Upon its release, the LR3 received praise for its off-road capability, versatility, and comfort. It was seen as a significant improvement over its predecessor, especially in terms of on-road dynamics and interior quality. However, like many Land Rovers of its time, it faced some criticisms regarding reliability and maintenance costs. The LR3 paved the way for the LR4 (Discovery 4), which further refined the design, interior, and mechanical elements introduced by the LR3. The modern Discoveries, even those beyond the LR nomenclature, owe much of their design and engineering ethos to the foundations laid by the LR3.
