Australia / Oceania Passenger Car Sales for 2018

Car sales in Australia in 2018 showed a decline compared to the previous year. A total of 1,153,111 new vehicles were sold, marking a decrease of approximately 3.0% compared to 2017. The decline in sales was primarily attributed to factors such as tightening lending conditions, rising living costs, and weaker consumer sentiment. Passenger cars declined a bit more at 4.58%, down to 873,713 units. SUVs remained popular among buyers, while passenger vehicle sales continued to decline. Toyota remained the top-selling brand in Australia, followed by Mazda and Hyundai. The Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, and Toyota Corolla were among the popular models.

In New Zealand, car sales experienced a slight increase in 2018. Total new vehicle registrations reached 161,519, marking a growth of approximately 0.8% compared to the previous year. The growth was driven by a stable economy, low-interest rates, and sustained consumer confidence. Toyota remained the top-selling brand, followed by Ford and Holden. The Ford Ranger and Toyota Corolla were among the popular models. Passenger cars stayed flat at 107,674 units.
