The company started out by assembling cars from foreign brands, such as Renault and Nissan. In the 1990s, Dongfeng began to develop its own car brands.

Dongfeng is a major player in the Chinese automotive market. The company sells over 3 million cars per year, and it is one of the leading exporters of cars from China. Dongfeng is also expanding its presence in international markets, such as Russia, Brazil, and India. The company is targeting to sell 1 million cars per year in international markets by 2025.
