The Toyota Previa, known as the Toyota Estima in Japan and other markets, is a minivan that was produced by Toyota from 1990 and went through two main generations. The Previa became known for its unique design, engineering choices, and a reputation for reliability. Introduced in 1990, the Previa was Toyota’s second minivan model after the Toyota Van (also known as the LiteAce and TownAce overseas).

One of the most distinct features of the Previa was its mid-engine design. The engine was located beneath the front seats, leading to a more spacious interior and a lower floor. This also resulted in a more even weight distribution. The Previa sported an almost egg-like aerodynamic shape, which was quite different from the boxy minivans of its time. Initially, the Previa was available in both rear-wheel drive and an optional all-wheel drive.

In the US market, the Previa was equipped with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine. The mid-engine layout, while unusual for a minivan, allowed for a spacious interior. Later in its life cycle, a supercharged version of this engine was made available to give the minivan a little extra oomph.

The second-generation Previa (or Estima) moved away from the distinctive mid-engine layout to a more conventional front-engine design, which allowed it to better comply with safety standards and regulations. This generation, which began around 2000, was more in line with other minivans in terms of design but maintained the Previa’s reputation for reliability.

In markets like the US, the Previa was eventually replaced by the more conventionally designed Toyota Sienna in 1997. However, the Estima nameplate continued in Japan and other markets. The Toyota Sienna provided a more traditional minivan layout, V6 power, and complied more easily with North American safety and emissions standards.
