Mitsubishi Eclipse Sales Figures

Mitsubishi Eclipse

Here you will find monthly and yearly Canadian, European, Chinese and U.S. sales figures for the Mitsubishi Eclipse. The Mitsubishi Eclipse is an iconic sports coupe that was produced by Mitsubishi Motors between 1989 and 2011.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Overview

The Eclipse was introduced in 1989 as part of a collaboration between Mitsubishi and Chrysler. This partnership was known as Diamond-Star Motors (DSM), and it resulted in the production of the Eclipse, the Eagle Talon, and the Plymouth Laser, which were mechanically very similar.

The Eclipse, especially in its turbocharged and all-wheel-drive configurations, was well-received for its performance, particularly during its first two generations. It had a strong following among car enthusiasts and was a popular choice for modification and tuning.

The Eclipse was discontinued after the 2011 model year. The decline in demand for sports coupes and shifts in market dynamics contributed to this decision. In a move that surprised and disappointed some purists, Mitsubishi reused the Eclipse name for an all-new compact crossover SUV called the “Eclipse Cross,” which debuted for the 2018 model year. While it bore the iconic name, the Eclipse Cross had no mechanical or design relation to the sports coupe that preceded it.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Generations

  • First Generation (1990-1994): The first-generation Eclipse was available in various trims, including the base, GS, GS DOHC, GS-Turbo, and the all-wheel-drive GSX. Engines ranged from a 1.8L SOHC to a 2.0L DOHC turbo.
  • Second Generation (1995-1999): This generation introduced a more curvaceous body style. The GSX model with its all-wheel-drive and turbocharged 2.0L engine became particularly popular among car enthusiasts.
  • Third Generation (2000-2005): A departure from the previous body styles, this generation dropped the hatchback design for a more traditional coupe and convertible (known as the Eclipse Spyder) look. The GSX trim was no longer available, and the vehicle moved away from its sport compact roots, becoming larger and more refined.
  • Fourth Generation (2006-2011): The final generation of the Eclipse was bulkier and more rounded. It was available as a coupe or convertible, with engine options that included a 2.4L four-cylinder or a 3.8L V6.
