Nissan Pathfinder Overview
The Nissan Pathfinder has been sold in many markets around the world. In the U.S., it is positioned as a competitive option in the mid-size SUV segment, rivalling vehicles like the Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, and Ford Explorer. Over the decades, the Pathfinder has transformed from a rugged, off-road-focused SUV to a more refined, family-oriented vehicle. This reflects the changing demands of consumers, many of whom now prioritize comfort, safety, and on-road performance over trail-blazing capabilities.
The Pathfinder is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 284 horsepower and 259 lb-ft of torque. It is available with a choice of a nine-speed automatic transmission or a seven-speed automatic transmission. The Pathfinder is available in two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive configurations. It is also available in a variety of trim levels, including the base Pathfinder, the SV, the SL, and the Platinum. The Pathfinder is a good choice for those looking for a comfortable and versatile SUV. It is also relatively affordable, starting at $35,295 in the United States.

Nissan Pathfinder Generations
First Generation (1986-1995)
Initially, the Pathfinder was a two-door SUV closely related to the Nissan Hardbody truck. It was a body-on-frame construction. The first-generation Pathfinder was a compact SUV that was powered by a 2.4-liter inline-4 engine that produced 110 horsepower. In 1990, Nissan added a four-door model.
Second Generation (1996-2004)
The second-generation Pathfinder was a mid-size SUV that was based on the Nissan Frontier pickup truck. It was powered by a 3.3-liter V6 engine that produced 170 horsepower. Transitioned from the body-on-frame to a unibody construction, which generally offers better ride quality and handling at the expense of rugged off-road capability. Engine options during this period included a V6 and, in some markets, a diesel variant. Four-wheel-drive remained a popular option.
Third Generation (2005-2012)
The third-generation Pathfinder was a full-size SUV that was based on the Nissan Armada. It was powered by a 4.0-liter V6 engine that produced 266 horsepower. Returned to the body-on-frame construction, emphasizing the Pathfinder’s ruggedness and off-road capability. Powered predominantly by V6 and V8 engine options. Offered three rows of seating to accommodate up to seven passengers.
Fourth Generation (2013-2022)
The fourth-generation Pathfinder was a mid-size SUV that was based on the Nissan D platform. It was powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine that produced 260 horsepower. Switched back to the unibody construction, with a focus on family comfort and on-road refinement. Typically powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine, although a hybrid variant was briefly available. Continued to offer three rows of seating and modern features, such as Nissan’s suite of driver-assistance and infotainment technologies.
Fifth generation (2023-present)
The fifth-generation Pathfinder is a mid-size SUV that is based on the Nissan FM platform. It is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 284 horsepower.
