Ford Taurus Police Interceptor

The Ford Taurus Police Interceptor is a specialized version of the Ford Taurus sedan that was modified for law enforcement use. After Ford discontinued the Crown Victoria in 2011 – a vehicle that was the staple of many police fleets for decades – the Taurus Police Interceptor (often simply referred to as the Ford Police Interceptor Sedan) was introduced as one of its replacements, along with the Police Interceptor Utility (based on the Ford Explorer). While the Taurus-based Police Interceptor was relatively short-lived compared to the long reign of the Crown Victoria, it was a significant vehicle in Ford’s lineup for law enforcement agencies throughout North America.

Ford Taurus Police Interceptor Overview

Compared to the civilian Taurus, the Police Interceptor had enhancements to cope with the rigors of police work, including a strengthened chassis, improved cooling, heavy-duty brakes, and a more robust suspension. The vehicle incorporated safety features tailored for police work, including anti-stab plates behind the front seats to protect officers from potential threats from detained individuals in the back seat.

It was available in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations, with the all-wheel-drive version being more popular for its better handling and performance in various conditions. The interior of the Police Interceptor was designed with law enforcement equipment in mind. This includes a column-shifted automatic transmission to free up the center console for equipment, reinforced seats, and pre-wiring for police equipment like lights and sirens.

The Ford Taurus Police Interceptor’s production ended in 2019 along with the civilian Ford Taurus. Since then, the Ford Police Interceptor Utility (based on the Explorer) and the Ford F-150 Police Responder have become more prevalent in Ford’s lineup for law enforcement.
