Volvo Sales Data, Trends, Analysis & Current Lineup for the U.S Automotive Market
This is your hub for all of the Volvo sales data for the U.S market. Volvo has been present in the US for decades, and its image remained unchanged for the majority of this time – staid, safe and family-friendly. This began to change in the late 1990s and early 2000s as models like the S40 and S60 targeted younger with more sporty design and dynamics. Having met with some success, Volvo in recent years (under new, Chinese ownership) decided to push decidedly upmarket, to come level with the likes of Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi and Lexus. In the US the car that is still associated with Volvo, the XC90 large SUV, is also its best seller, selling more than 30,000 units per year. Ever since its launch, Volvo has been more dependent on crossover sales than its luxury rivals, and this has continued as the share of crossovers in Volvo’s US sales has increased from 41% in 2010 to nearly 78% in 2018 and 2019.
The XC60 and XC40 have contributed to this success, while the 90-series and 60-series sedan and wagon have struggled to make a mark in their respective segments, despite Volvo’s Cross Country versions of them, which are more popular in Europe. Volvo is a luxury vehicle brand owned by Geely, a Chinese automotive company. The company manufactures and markets sport utility vehicles (SUVs), station wagons, sedans and compact executive sedans. The Volvo brand has been around in the US for decades. It was even acquired by Ford from 1999 to 2010, which helped the brand achieved some success in the US after selling over 100,000 units for ten straight years. After the financial crisis in 2008, Ford was forced to sell the brand to the Chinese automotive company, Geely. Volvo has stuck to its image as a manufacturer of staid, safe, and family friendly vehicles for much of its existence. But that changed when it was acquired by Geely and decided to market it as a separate luxury brand that will compete against the likes of Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi and Lexus.
Volvo U.S Sales Figures & Recent Highlights
Volvo sales in US was quite good when it was acquired by Ford in 1999. The brand sold over 100,000 vehicle for ten straight years before Ford was forced to sell it to Geely. Since then, Volvo sales in the US has been good so far. In 2019, Volvo sold over 100,000 vehicles in the US which is the first time since 2007. 2019 also marks the sixth consecutive year of sales growth for the luxury vehicle brand in the US.
According to Volvo Car USA, the company’s U.S. sales figures for 2022 were 102,038 cars, down 16.5 percent compared to 2021. The XC60 was the top-selling model, with 39,250 units sold, followed by the XC90 with 36,450 units sold and the XC40 with 21,900 units sold. In January 2023, Volvo announced that it would be investing $1.5 billion to build a new manufacturing plant in South Carolina. The plant is scheduled to open in 2025 and will produce electric vehicles.
