2021 Best Selling SUVs In Europe (All Models Ranked)

In 2021, the European automotive market continued its recovery from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, though challenges remained. The SUV segment, which had been growing in dominance for years, persisted as a major force in the market. There was also an evident push towards electrification across the continent. The automotive market showed signs of recovery in 2021, although it still faced supply chain disruptions, semiconductor shortages, and other challenges. Despite these, SUVs retained their popularity and held a considerable share of the market.

Consistently a top performer, the Volkswagen Tiguan remained a preferred choice for many Europeans, benefiting from its versatility and the strength of the Volkswagen brand. The Renault Captur continued its strong performance in the subcompact SUV segment, especially in Western European markets. Following its success in the previous year, the Peugeot 2008 remained popular thanks to its modern design, efficient drivetrains, and the overall momentum of the Peugeot brand in the SUV segment. Building on its impressive debut, the Ford Puma further solidified its position in the market, becoming one of the top choices in the small SUV category. As hybrid technology became more mainstream, the Toyota C-HR enjoyed steady sales, leveraging Toyota’s reputation for hybrid reliability and efficiency.

Driven by environmental concerns, tightening regulations, and increasing consumer interest, the shift towards electrified SUVs became even more pronounced. Electric SUVs like the Volkswagen ID.4, Ford Mustang Mach-E, and Tesla Model Y gained traction. Additionally, hybrid and plug-in hybrid SUV variants from various manufacturers continued to see growth. Despite broader economic challenges, the luxury SUV segment demonstrated resilience. New and refreshed models from brands like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi, such as the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE, and Audi Q3, performed well.
