Overall, 2019 presented a challenging year for car sales in Australia and Oceania. Both Australia and New Zealand experienced a decline in sales, reflecting economic factors and weaker consumer sentiment. Car sales in Australia in 2019 showed a significant decline compared to the previous year. A total of 1,062,867 new vehicles were sold, marking a decrease of approximately 7.8% compared to 2018. The decline in sales was primarily attributed to factors such as tightening lending conditions, economic slowdown, and weaker consumer sentiment. Passenger cars fared slightly worse, with a decline of 8.52% to 799k units. SUVs continued to be the popular choice among buyers. Toyota remained the top-selling brand in Australia, followed by Mazda and Hyundai. The Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, and Toyota Corolla were among the popular models.
In New Zealand, car sales experienced a modest decline in 2019. Total new vehicle registrations reached 154,224, marking a decrease of approximately 4.3% compared to the previous year. The decline was influenced by factors such as economic uncertainty and tighter lending conditions. Toyota remained the top-selling brand, followed by Ford and Mitsubishi. The Ford Ranger and Toyota Corolla were among the popular models. Passenger cars declined too, down 3.77% versus prior year.
