Africa Passenger Car Sales for 2012

In 2012, the African automotive market continued to show positive growth in many countries. Economic conditions improved in various regions, leading to increased consumer purchasing power and a higher demand for vehicles. South Africa remained the largest car market in Africa in 2012. The country’s automotive industry experienced continued double digit growth, and car sales increased 11% to 440k new units. The rest of the top African countries saw strong growth in passenger car sales as these countries continued to recover and expand. The automotive industry showed improvement, with increased local production and sales as well as an influx of foreign investment.

The indicator estimates the number of new passenger car registrations and sales that took place within a country in a year. Passenger cars are road motor vehicles, other than a motor cycle, intended for the carriage of passengers and designed to seat no more than nine persons (including the driver).
