Africa Passenger Car Sales for 2007
South Africa remained the largest car market in Africa in 2007, but sales declined by almost 10% to 435k new passenger cars sold. The country had a well-developed automotive industry, with a mix of locally manufactured vehicles and imports. Popular car brands included Toyota, Volkswagen, Ford, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. South Africa also exported a significant number of vehicles to other African countries.
Countries like Egypt, Morocco, and Algeria continued to have prominent car markets and all grew by double digits, as did Botswana. At the other end is Nigeria, which contracted by 68% and Angola, which was down 56%. Car sales in other sub-Saharan African countries varied. Economic factors, limited access to financing, and underdeveloped infrastructure influenced the market. Smaller, affordable vehicles were generally in demand. Brands like Toyota, Nissan, and Suzuki had a significant presence in many countries.
