Africa Passenger Car Sales for 2005

In 2005, the automotive industry in Africa experienced varied car sales patterns across different countries and regions. It’s important to note that Africa is a diverse continent with numerous economies at different stages of development, so car sales figures varied significantly from one country to another. South Africa has the most developed automotive industry on the continent. In 2005, it accounted for a significant portion of car sales in Africa. The country had a well-established manufacturing sector and a relatively high rate of car ownership. Some popular car brands in South Africa included Toyota, Volkswagen, Ford, and BMW.

Countries like Egypt, Morocco, and Algeria had relatively larger car markets compared to other African nations. Egypt, in particular, had a sizable domestic automotive industry and a relatively higher number of car sales. Brands like Peugeot, Renault, and Hyundai had a significant presence in these countries. As the most populous country in Africa, Nigeria had a considerable demand for cars in 2005. However, the majority of cars in Nigeria were imported used vehicles, commonly known as “Tokunbo” cars. These were typically older models from countries like the United States, Europe, and Asia. Japanese brands such as Toyota, Honda, and Nissan were quite popular.
