It was produced from 1997 to 2009 in three generations. It originated as a high-end version of the GMC Jimmy and later replaced the Jimmy entirely.
GMC Envoy Overview
The Envoy started its life as a luxury trim level of the GMC Jimmy in the late 1990s. This version was characterized by a more upscale interior and additional equipment compared to the regular Jimmy.
In 2002, the Envoy became its own standalone model, representing GMC’s entry in the midsize SUV segment. The first generation Envoy was based on the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and Oldsmobile Bravada. It was available with a choice of two engines: a 4.3L V6 engine or a 5.3L V8 engine. It was available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The Envoy was available in standard and extended-length (XL) versions, with the latter offering a third-row seat for additional passengers. The Envoy was also offered in a more luxurious trim level known as the Envoy Denali, which featured a unique grille, luxury interior appointments, and additional standard equipment.
The second generation Envoy was introduced in 2002 and was based on the redesigned Chevrolet TrailBlazer. It was available with the same engines as the first generation Envoy, but it also offered a new 3.5L V6 engine. The third and final generation Envoy was introduced in 2006 and was based on the redesigned Chevrolet TrailBlazer. It was available with the same engines as the second generation Envoy, but it also offered a new 2.9L turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
The Envoy was discontinued in 2009 after the introduction of the GMC Acadia. During its production run, the Envoy competed in the crowded midsize SUV segment against vehicles like the Ford Explorer, Toyota 4Runner, and Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The Envoy was generally well-received for its comfortable ride, strong inline-six engine, and spacious interior. The Denali trim, in particular, was praised for its luxury features and appointments. The Envoy was discontinued after the 2009 model year. Factors such as shifting consumer preferences towards crossovers, economic challenges, and the broader restructuring of General Motors played roles in its discontinuation. The GMC Terrain and Acadia, both crossovers, filled the void in GMC’s lineup after the Envoy’s departure.
