Canada Automotive Sales Data & Recent Highlights
The Canadian market has had huge growth in total vehicle sales over the last 60 years. On average between 1946 and 2018 the automotive market has grown 4.9% per year. The worst year was 1982 where sales declined 23% and the most growth came in 1946 at 92%. In 1946 Canadians bought 120,000 new vehicles whereas in 2017 they bought just under 2.1 million cars. As expected the late 1940s and 1950s saw a big increase in the growth rate of new car purchases as Canadians became more mobile and the economy grew post WWII.
The early 1970s and 1980s saw big growth increases with almost 20% unit growth early in both decades. After that growth hovered between 1 and 5% for the next few decades up until recently. As expected there was a big dip during the financial crisis in 2007 and 2008 but then things picked up again into 2009 and 2010 and haven’t looked back. There was some softness in 2018 with a 2% decline in new unit sales.
More recently, the Canadian car sales market has been recovering in recent years. The market has been growing at an average annual growth rate of 8.3%. There are a number of factors that have contributed to the recovery of the Canadian car sales market. The Canadian economy has been recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, which is leading to an increase in disposable income and consumer spending. The government has introduced a number of new incentives for car buyers, such as a reduction in the Goods and Services Tax (GST).
Despite the recovery, the Canadian car sales market is expected to face some challenges in the coming years. including inflation which is rising in Canada, which could make cars more expensive. The shortage of semiconductors is affecting the production of new cars, making it difficult to find cars for sale in Canada. The price of used cars has increased in recent years, making them more affordable than new cars.
Overall, the Canadian car sales market is expected to remain positive in the coming years. However, there are some challenges that the market will need to address in order to maintain its growth.
