Toyota Corolla Overview

The Toyota Corolla was introduced in 1966 in Japan and made its way to the United States in 1968. The name “Corolla” is derived from the Latin word for “small crown,” following Toyota’s naming trend (with models like Crown, Camry, etc.).

The Corolla has undergone numerous redesigns across its multiple generations. While it started as a subcompact car, it has since grown into the compact segment. While earlier models were relatively simple in design and function, recent generations have seen a more modern design language and a bevy of technological features. Over its long history, the Corolla has been powered by a range of engines, primarily efficient four-cylinder variants. Depending on the market and generation, the Corolla has been offered with gasoline, diesel, hybrid, and even performance-oriented engines. Generally, the Corolla is tuned more for comfort and efficiency rather than sporty performance.

The Corolla’s global reach is vast, with sales spanning across North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and South America. Depending on the region, the Corolla can have specific variations in terms of specifications, design elements, and features. For instance, in some markets, the Corolla is also available as a station wagon or a hatchback.

The current Corolla is available in both gasoline and hybrid models. The gasoline model is powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 139 horsepower and 126 lb-ft of torque. It is mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The hybrid model is powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor that produces a combined output of 121 horsepower. It is also mated to a CVT.

The Corolla has a comfortable and spacious interior that can seat up to five people. It also has a large trunk with 13.9 cubic feet of cargo space. The Corolla is equipped with a standard 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also has a rearview camera and Bluetooth connectivity. The starting MSRP for the Toyota Corolla gasoline model is $20,075. The starting MSRP for the Toyota Corolla hybrid model is $22,195.
