Mitsubishi Lancer Overview
The Mitsubishi Lancer is one of the most recognized models from Mitsubishi Motors. Known for its long history and wide range of variants, including the legendary high-performance Lancer Evolution, the Lancer has earned its place in automotive history. The Mitsubishi Lancer was first introduced in 1973. It was initially a compact car positioned below the larger Galant in Mitsubishi’s lineup.
The original Lancer was available in a range of body styles, including two- and four-door sedans, a two-door coupe, and a five-door station wagon. It was known for its sporty styling and performance, especially in the Lancer 1600 GSR variant which achieved success in rally competitions. Over the years, the Lancer underwent various redesigns, with each generation refining its styling, performance, and features. The car grew in size over time and moved from the compact to the small family car segment.
Spanning ten generations (from 1992 to 2016), the Lancer Evolution (commonly known as the “Evo”) was a high-performance version of the Lancer. With turbocharged engines, all-wheel drive, and a focus on performance, the Evo became a favorite among car enthusiasts and earned a strong reputation in motorsports, particularly in the World Rally Championship.
Mitsubishi Lancer Sales Figures
The Lancer was sold under various names in different regions. For instance, it was known as the Colt Lancer in some markets, the Dodge/Plymouth Colt in the United States (through a partnership with Chrysler), and the Mirage in others. The Mitsubishi Lancer’s production for most global markets ceased in 2017, marking the end of a long and storied production run. The decline of sedan sales in favor of SUVs and crossovers played a role in its discontinuation.
